The civilian pathway
Airframe and Powerplant are separate FAA mechanic ratings. Routes include an FAA-approved aviation maintenance technician school or qualifying documented practical experience. Experience eligibility normally requires 18 months for one rating or 30 months concurrently for both; the FAA evaluates evidence. Required knowledge, oral and practical tests remain. Military experience does not automatically grant a certificate.
